Manmeet K Walia: Curating Art, Crafting Narratives

January 11, 2024

French Impressionist Artist, Edgar Degas, once said, “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” Art is a medium for conveying thoughtful messages to many, as each art piece carries a story. But how that Story is shared and perceived is as crucial as how it is told.

Meet Manmeet K Walia, an artist and art curator, who weaves beautiful, thought-provoking stories through captivating creations. As an Artist, her art showcases a blend of a thoughtful mind and an empathetic heart that resonates deeply with audiences, evoking appreciation for its beauty and meaningful essence. And as an Indian curator specializing in young South Asian Art, she raises social issues by creating experiential discourse.

Manmeet’s Artistic Evolution

Manmeet Walia graduated in English Literature from Delhi University in 2007. Following this, she contributed for over 5 years in the media field, writing for reputed newspapers and magazines, including The Economic Times, Harper's Bazaar Magazine and Hindustan Times.

From the beginning, Manmeet had a keen interest in the field of Art and Painting, which she later transitioned into a career after years of contribution in the Media field. After initially creating some freelance art projects, her dedication led her to become the Sub Editor of the online public art platform “Tracingartinpublic” (TAP) in 2016. After serving there for a year, she decided to enhance her knowledge of Art Writing and curation further. So in 2017, she went to the University of the Arts, London to do an Art Curatorship course.

Returning to India, she assumed the role of Chief Curator at “KnownUnknown” in 2018, managing professional networking, corporate, and curatorial projects. In 2019, she served as Project Director at “Pichvai Tradition & Beyond”. This way, she contributed to numerous contemporary art exhibitions across digital and physical platforms.

Manmeet K Walia also volunteers as a Curator at "Kala Sakshi Memorial Trust." Her role involves creating an ecosystem that connects and promotes emerging artists amongst Young Collectors, making Art more Accessible.

Employing her curatorial style as an expressive art form, Manmeet, as a Curator, addresses societal issues by creating experiential discourses. Her curation facilitates collaborations and public engagement, complementing her global artistic practice. Manmeet K Walia's artistic journey showcases a seamless fusion of passion, dedication, and transition across diverse fields.
