Pioneering Financial Empowerment for Women through “WOW”: Priyanka Bhatia

January 2, 2024

We often talk about Women’s Empowerment, but does empowerment start with financial freedom? Yes, it is true. Women must have control over their financial resources as it enables women to make choices, voice opinions, and shape their destinies. It’s not just about money but about living with dignity and respect.

Recognizing the need for financial freedom for women, Priyanka Bhatia, founder of “Women on Wealth” (WOW), educates and empowers women in making financial decisions. Through WOW, she provides women with the tools and knowledge to navigate the financial world successfully.

Priyanka Bhatia: A Journey To Financial Independence

Priyanka Bhatia completed her Postgraduate studies in Business Journalism in 2006. In the early stages of her career, she worked as a journalist at the Press Trust Of India (PTI) and later at Indo-Asian News Service (IANS). While working at media channels, she earned a handsome salary. But despite earning good money, she was hardly saving. Because, like every other girl, she used to spend her money on jewelry, clothing, and entertainment. Also, Her father's traditional savings approach with her money through PPF and Fixed Deposit hindered her ability to save independently. But soon, her eyes opened when she saw her male colleagues buying their own houses and building up savings on the same salary as her. It made her feel concerned, and she asked herself, “Why am I unable to do the same?”

She shared her concerns with her family, but her family members were of a deeply traditional mindset. They suggested she should not worry about money, as her future husband would handle those concerns after marriage. But she wanted to be independent, fly, and break every ceiling, proving to others that women are fully capable of attaining financial independence and success.

Overcoming Challenges In Finance

She decided to go every mile to learn about finance and make her wealth. However, she had a rough start. In 2008, she opened her Demat account, and while trading, she lost her hard-earned money. But this loss didn’t break her; instead, it made her more curious to know how investing works. She took help and guidance from her friends, a business coach, a stock investor, a property investor, and a serial entrepreneur. Also, she read many books and informational magazines to enhance her knowledge.

Due to her dedication and continuous learning, by 2009, she earned up to Rs. 70,000 through her investment portfolio. This small success boosted her confidence, leading her deeper into finance. Soon, she bought a Rs. 17 Lakh property all by herself. Her challenges and victories motivated her to educate other women in making investments and financial decisions.

Transforming Lives: Wow’s Impact On Women’s Financial Empowerment

In 2011, Priyanka launched “Women on Wealth” (WOW), a financial community providing training and coaching programs that enable women to make independent financial decisions. WOW notably receives guidance from the esteemed Cherie Blair Foundation for Women and also serves as its partner. WOW launched several flagship programs, including “WOW Money Gym,” helping women understand the basics of an investment portfolio, and “Art Of Picking Quality Stocks,” educating women about stocks, companies, and the market.

The platform trains and encourages both working women and homemakers to take charge of their financial decisions. Women who joined WOW are saving over 25% of their income and making quality investments without seeking male support. They have built their own houses, purchased property, started businesses, and managed vacations, all after connecting with WOW. Moreover, after completing programs, women become key members of WOW’s vibrant Women Investors Community, uniting to achieve their financial goals and enhance their financial skills.

Priyanka has been recognized in esteemed publications and media outlets, including BBC News, NDTV, Zee Business, Hindustan Times, Femina, Huffington Post, and Sheroes, among others. Priyanka Bhatia’s unwavering commitment to financial empowerment has significantly impacted countless women. Her journey is an inspiration, highlighting that financial independence is the gateway to women’s empowerment and societal change.
