Meet Shikha Agnihotri, an Educator Turned Entrepreneur Is Transforming School Safety

April 25, 2025

In most Indian schools, test scores and curriculum updates dominate the agenda. But behind the scenes, a quieter, more critical concern often goes unaddressed—student safety. Shikha Agnihotri saw this gap as an oversight and a crisis waiting to be solved.

“Being part of the education fraternity since 2010, I witnessed firsthand how safety in schools was often overlooked,” Shikha Agnihotri observed. This reflection sparked a three-year research initiative that would become the foundation of her venture in 2019, Right Side Story.

From Observation to Action

Driven by her commitment to student welfare, Agnihotri collaborated extensively with school leaders, law enforcement personnel, and medical experts. This multidisciplinary approach revealed significant vulnerabilities in existing safety frameworks, particularly regarding compliance with the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act and other child protection regulations.

What distinguishes Right Side Story in the educational consulting landscape is its holistic approach to safeguarding. The company doesn't merely offer compliance guidance—it creates comprehensive safety ecosystems tailored to each institution's specific needs.

"We believe safeguarding is a shared responsibility," explains Agnihotri. "By engaging educators, students, and staff, we drive sustainable change that allows students to grow, learn, and thrive in a safe and supportive setting."

Impressive Growth and Impact

In just over four years, Right Side Story has achieved remarkable success. The company has partnered with more than 2,000 schools and 600 colleges across 40+ cities in India, positively impacting the safety of approximately 350,000 students. This rapid expansion speaks to both the critical need for such services and the effectiveness of their approach.

The company's growth trajectory has been equally impressive from a business perspective, with revenue increasing by 100% and the creation of over 100 new jobs. These numbers reflect not only commercial success but also the expanding sphere of influence in promoting child safety standards nationwide.

Innovation in Child Protection

At the core of Right Side Story's impact is its innovative Child Protection Policy framework, specifically designed for Indian educational institutions. This framework aligns with the POCSO Act while incorporating international best practices in child safeguarding.

"Our policy framework provides a clear roadmap for schools to implement child safety measures," Agnihotri notes. The comprehensive approach includes staff training, student awareness programs, incident reporting protocols, and regular safety audits—all designed to be adaptable regardless of an institution's size or resources.

This solution-oriented approach transforms child protection from an overwhelming regulatory burden into a structured, achievable goal for educational institutions.

Beyond Compliance: Creating Cultural Change

What truly sets Right Side Story apart is its focus on cultural transformation. Rather than viewing child safety as merely a checkbox for regulatory compliance, Agnihotri's organization fosters a fundamental shift in how educational institutions approach student wellbeing.

This philosophy has led to partnerships with major brands like P&G (Whisper, Venus, Gillette India), resulting in programs that have trained over 200,000 girls on menstrual health and hygiene in just five months. Additional initiatives have reached another 200,000 young people through comprehensive programs on responsible adulthood and personality development.

Challenges and Solutions

The path hasn't been without obstacles. One significant challenge has been overcoming resistance to change within established educational systems. Right Side Story addresses this through stakeholder engagement strategies that bring together school management, teachers, parents, and students in building and sustaining safer educational spaces.

"We've found that lasting change happens when everyone feels ownership of the safety practices," Agnihotri explains. "It's about creating systems that protect children while empowering the entire educational community."

Looking Ahead

As Right Side Story continues to grow, Agnihotri has ambitious plans for the coming year. The company aims to partner with an additional 1,000+ educational institutions and launch a digital resource hub providing easy access to child safety guidelines, compliance checklists, and expert-led training modules.

"Our vision is to make child protection more accessible, actionable, and effective," shares Agnihotri. "Every student deserves to learn in an environment where they feel secure and supported."

In a country with one of the world's largest educational systems, Shikha Agnihotri's Right Side Story is proving that creating safer learning environments is both an essential responsibility and an achievable goal, one school at a time.
